THE 50's

In the 50’s in the south of the USA, people lived separately in two different neighborhoods: the black and the white neighborhoods. They were totally different. In the black neighborhood, black people played and sang “Rhythm and Blues” (R&B) which was similar to traditional Blues but faster. Blues was the music style that free black slaves sang from one plantation to another for a living. It was an easy music style based just in three chords always repeating themselves. Blues songs were sad but R&B was faster and happier, just perfect to dance and have a great time!

R&B songs became really famous among black people but also among young white people! For that reason, they started to buy R&B’s recordings in the “black market”. These recordings had a sticker on top saying “race record”, that meant that this music could be heard and bought just by black people. Since also white people wanted to listen to R&B, white record companies decided to create a similar music style but this time sung by white people and for white people. The name of this new music style was “Rock and Roll” (R&R) and it became very famous too.

The most well-known R&B singer was Chuck Berry, and the most famous R&R icon was Elvis Presley, also known as Elvis “The Pelvis”, or simply the “King of Rock”.

R&B: CHUCK BERRY

berryanthology.jpg

Charles Edward Anderson-Chuck Berry (born October 18, 1926) is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter, and one of the pioneers of rock and roll music. With songs such as "Maybellene" (1955), "Roll Over Beethoven" (1956), "Rock and Roll Music" (1957) and "JohnnyB. Goode" (1958), Chuck Berry refined and developed rhythm and blues into the major elements that made rock and roll distinctive, with lyrics focusing on teen life and consumerism and utilizing guitar solos and showmanship that would be a major influence on subsequent rock music. Now he is 84 years old. He played in a concert on the first of January this year.

Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode

Deep down Louisiana close to New Orleans,
Way back up in the woods among the evergreens
There stood a log cabin made of earth and wood,
Where lived a country boy named of Johnny B. Goode
Who never ever learned to read or write so well,
But he could play the guitar like ringing a bell.

[Chorus:]
Go Go
Go Johnny Go
Go Go
Johnny B. Goode

He use to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
Or sit beneath the trees by the railroad track.
Oh, the engineers used to see him sitting in the shade,
Strumming with the rhythm that the drivers made.
The People passing by, they would stop and say
Oh my that little country boy could play

[Chorus]

His mother told him someday you will be a man,
And you would be the leader of a big old band.
Many people coming from miles around
To hear you play your music when the sun go down
Maybe someday your name will be in lights
Saying Johnny B. Goode tonight.

[Chorus]

Chuck Berry - You can't catch me (1956)

R&R: ELVIS AARON PRESLEY

2.jpg

Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was an American singer and actor. A culturalicon, he is commonly known by the singlename Elvis. One of the most popular musicians of the 20th century, he is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll".

Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis began his career there in 1954, working with SunRecords owner SamPhillips, who wanted to bring the sound of African-American music to a wider audience. Presley's first RCA single, "HeartbreakHotel", released in January 1956, was a number-one hit. He became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll with a series of network television appearances and chart-topping records. His energized interpretations of songs, many from African-American sources, and his uninhibited performance style made him enormously popular—and controversial. In November 1956, he made his film debut in "Love Me Tender".

He staged few concerts however, and guided by Parker, proceeded to devote much of the 1960s to making Hollywood movies and soundtrack albums, most of them critically derided. In 1968, after seven years away from the stage, he returned to live performance in a celebrated comeback televisio nspecial that led to an extended Las Vegas concert residency and a string of profitable tours. In 1973 Presley staged the first concert broadcast globally via satellite, Aloha from Hawaii. Prescription drug abuse severely deteriorated his health, and he died suddenly in 1977 at the age of 42.

Below the lyrics of the most famous songs are presented:

Elvis Presley - Can't Help Falling In Love

Wise men say only fools rush in
but I can't help falling in love with you
Shall I stay
would it be a sin
If I can't help falling in love with you

Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
some things are meant to be
take my hand, take my whole life too
for I can't help falling in love with you

Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
some things are meant to be
take my hand, take my whole life too
for I can't help falling in love with you
for I can't help falling in love with you

Elvis Presley - Always On My Mind

Recorded in 1973 by Elvis Presley won the 16th place on the Billboard charts.

Maybe I didn't treat you
Quite as good as I should have
Maybe I didn't love you
Quite as often as I could have
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time

You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Tell me, tell me that your sweet love hasn't died
Give me, give me one more chance
To keep you satisfied, satisfied

Maybe I didn't hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
And I guess I never told you
Im so happy that you're mine
If I make you feel second best
Girl, Im sorry I was blind

You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Tell me, tell me that your sweet love hasn't died
Give me, give me one more chance
To keep you satisfied, satisfied

Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind
You are always on my mind
You are always on my mind

THE 60's

At the beginning of the 60’s, in the USA nothing had changed: Rock’n’Roll (R&R) and Rythm’n’Blues (R&B) music were still very popular, but there also appeared some new styles related to summertime and having fun such as:
  • Surf music
  • Limbo music
  • Twist music

SURF MUSIC

images.jpg
images.jpg

Surf music is a genre of popular music associated with surf culture, particularly as found in Orange County and other areas of Southern California. It was especially popular from 1961 to 1966, has subsequently been revived and was highly influential on subsequent rock music It has two major forms: largely instrumental surf rock, with an electric guitar or saxophone playing the main melody, largely pioneered by Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, and vocal surf pop, including both surf ballads and dance music, often with strong harmonies that are most associated with The Beach Boys. Many notable surf bands have been equally noted for both surf instrumental and surf pop music, so surf music is generally considered as a single genre despite the variety of these styles.

Form:

Surf music began in the early 1960s as instrumental dance music, almost always in straight 4/4 (or common) time, with a medium to fast tempo. The sound was dominated by electric guitars which were particularly characterized by the extensive use of the "wet"spring reverb that was incorporated into Fender amplifiers from 1961, which is thought to emulate the sound of the waves. Surf music was one of the first genres to universally adopt the electric bass. Some popular songs also incorporated a tenor or baritonesaxophone, as on "Surf Ride" and "Comanche". Often an electric organ or an electric piano featured as backing harmony.

Vocal surf pop:

Although it began as a purely instrumental form, surf music achieved its greatest commercial success as vocal music. Most associated with this movement were the Beach Boys. Their early albums included both instrumental surf rock, including covers of music by Dick Dale, and vocal songs. Other vocal surf acts followed, including one-hit wonders like Bruce and Terry with "Summer Means Fun".

Hot rod rock:

Hot rod rock is a form of surf music that incorporates instrumental surf rock with car noises (revving engines and screeching tires). From 1963, the Beach Boys began to leave surfing behind as subject matter as Brian Wilson became their major composer and producer, moving on to the more general themes of male adolescence, including cars and girls, in songs like "Don't Worry Baby” (1964) and "Little Deuce Coupe" (1963). "Little Deuce Coupe" has been cited as one of the earliest forms of hard rock with its series of buzzing beats.

The Beach Boys

The Beach Boys are an American rock band, formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California. The group was initially composed of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. The band's early music gained popularity across the United States for its close vocal harmonies and lyrics reflecting a Southern California youth culture of surfing, cars, and romance. By the mid-1960s, Brian Wilson's growing creative ambition and songwriting ability would dominate the group's musical direction. The primarily Wilson-composed Pet Sounds album and "Good Vibrations" single (both released in 1966) featured a complex, intricate and multi-layered sound that represented a departure from the simple surf rock of the Beach Boys' early years.
The Beach Boys have often been called "America's Band", and Allmusic has stated that their "unerring ability ... made them America's first, best rock band. The group has had thirty-six United States Top 40 hits (the most by an American rock band) and fifty-six Hot 100 hits, including four number-one singles. Rolling Stone magazine listed the Beach Boys at number 12 on their 2004 list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".

Now I see your smile
Darkness goes and softness shows
A changing style

Just in time words that rhyme
Well bless your soul
Now I'll fill your hands
With kisses and a Tootsie Roll

Oh reality, it's not for me
And it makes me laugh
Oh, fantasy world and Disney girls
I'm coming back

Patti Page and summer days
On old Cape Cod
Happy times making wine
In my garage
Country shade and lemonade

Guess I'm slowing down
It's a turned back world
With a local girl

In a smaller town

Open cars and clearer stars
That's what I've lacked
But fantasy world and Disney girls
I'm coming back

Love...Hi Rick and Dave
Hi Pop...Well good morning mom
Love...get up guess what
I'm in love with a girl I found
She's really swell
Cause she likes
Church, bingo chances and old time dances

All my life I spent the night
With dreams of you
And the warmth I missed
And for the things I wished
They're all coming true

I've got my love to give
And a place to live
Guess I'm gonna stay
It'd be a peaceful life
With a forever wife
And a kid someday

It's earlier nights
And pillow fights
And your soft laugh
Fantasy world and Disney girls
I'm coming back

"Disney Girls (1957)" is a song written by Bruce Johnston for the American rock band The Beach Boys. It was released on their 1971 album Surf's Up. The lead vocals are by Johnston, who also plays keyboards, moog bass, and mandolin.
"Disney Girls " has proven to be one of Bruce Johnston's most enduring songs, still occasionally performed by The Beach Boys in concert to this day. It has been covered by many artists, including Art Garfunkel, Cass Elliott, Jack Jones, Captain & Tennille, and even Johnston himself, on his 1977 solo album Going Public. Cass Elliot's version (from the album Cass Elliot) is notable for featuring both Johnston and Carl Wilson.

TWIST MUSIC

The Twist was a dance inspired by rock and roll music. It became the first worldwide dance craze in the early 1960s, enjoying immense popularity among young people and drawing fire from critics who felt it was too provocative.

The dance was inspired by "The Twist," Chubby Checker's 1960 cover of the B-side of Hank Ballard and The Midnighters' 1959 single, "Teardrops on Your Letter."

foto 1-let's twist again.jpg foto 2 - Lets_Twist_2_vorne.jpg foto 3.jpg

Chubby Checker (born Ernest Evans, October 3, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter. He is widely known for popularizing the twist dance style, with his 1960 hit cover of Hank Ballard's R&B hit "The Twist". In September 2008 "The Twist" topped Billboard's list of the most popular singles to have appeared in the Hot 100 since its debut in 1958.

Ernest Evans was born in Spring Gulley, South Carolina.By age eight Evans formed a street-corner harmony group, and by the time he entered high school, learned to play the piano. He would entertain his classmates by performing vocal impressions of popular entertainers of the day, such as Jerry Lee Lwis, Elvis Presleyand Fats Domino.

foto 5 - CHUBBY_CHECKER_1.jpgIt was at this recording session that Evans got his stage name from Clark's wife, who asked Evans what his name was. "Well", he replied, "my friends call me 'Chubby'". As he had just completed a Fats Domino impression, she smiled and said, "As in Checker?"foto 4 - images.jpg That little play on words ('chubby' meaning 'fat', and 'checkers', like 'dominoes', being a game) got an instant laugh and stuck, and from then on, Evans would use the name "Chubby Checker".Checker is the only recording artist to place five albums in the Top 12 all at once. The performer has often claimed to have personally changed the way we dance to the beat of music, as when he told Billboard, "Anyplace on the planet, when someone has a song that has a beat, they're on the floor dancing apart to the beat. And before Chubby Checker, it wasn't here."

Let's twist again

Chubby Checker

Come on everybody clap your hands
Now you're looking good
I'm gonna sing my song and you won't take long
We gotta do the twist and it goes like this

Come on let's twist again like we did last summer
Yea, let's twist again like we did last year
Do you remember when things were really hummin'
Yea, let's twist again, twistin' time is here

Yeah round 'n around 'n up 'n down we go again
Oh baby make me know you love me so then
Come on let's twist again like we did last summer
Yea, let's twist again, twistin' time is here

Come on let's twist again like we did last summer
Yea, let's twist again like we did last year
Do you remember when things were really hummin'
Yea, let's twist again, twistin' time is here

Yeah round 'n around 'n up 'n down we go again
Oh baby make me know you love me so then
Come on let's twist again like we did last summer
Yea, let's twist again, twistin' time ïs here

Meanwhile in Europe, in the UK, a new music style called “Pop music” or just “Pop” appeared. It was an easy music style which people could easily find nice. Its topics were familiar to all of them, mainly about love. Young people really enjoyed this new style of music. The most important groups were The Beatles” and The Rolling Stones”.

(active years: 1960-1970)A rockband with the biggest influence on rock and the most successful rockband which sold more than 1.3 billion plates by the end of 2004- more than anybody else in the world. They tried out a lot of music styles and sometimes combined a few. Beside pop and rock they mixed folk, country, blues, soul and a lot of others in their music. They also tried many new music trends like hard rock etc.The Beatles.jpg

Their appearance in 1963 was a big sensation in The United Kingdom, by 1964 their popularity spread troughout North America especially after their appearance on Ed Sullivan’s Show. In 1964s Billboard Top 100 list they were on the first 5 placements: since then, nobody has been able to achieve this. There are 4 movies about them: Hard Day’s Night, Help!, Yellow submarine, Let it be (which won an Academy Award, more known as an Oscar for best original soundtrack category). Their last live performance was on the top of the Apple studio in January, 1969. They officially split up in 1970 and after John Lennon’s death in 1980 all hope of their reunion died.

The world’s most popular performers, after selling more than a billion plates/CDs) worldwide. In 1965 at their performance in Shea Stadium they broke the record of the most visited concert (55 600 people) and the concert with the biggest income. This was the first music concert which took part not in a theatre, or a concert hall but a stadium. They broke every viewing record in the Ed Sullivan show. More than 70 million viewers watched it. On the 12th of June, 1965 the members of The Beatles received an order of MBE (…).

Lennon’s songs are full of pain and hope. His music was either very happy or very sad. His lyrics usually contained his personal or career dreams, his thoughts, the backkick of popularity and his opinion about actual happenings. With McCartney they achieved to bring in the electronic effects into rock, making them able to turn it into multiple different styles.

During The Beatles’s career most songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. There are only a few songs connected to Harrison’s name. While Harrison was still a member of The Beatles he started to grow his interest towards Indian music and hinduism. At that time the whole population was interested in the eastern religions, philosophy and music. Later Harrisons interest towards meditation became a part of Harrison’s personal life and music. Harrison organized the first big charity concert.

(1962 - present)

The Rolling Stones is a British rock band, which took part in the so called British invasion in the beginning of 1960’s. It was a leading band in the British Blues wave. During their American tour in ’69 they were referred to as the best rock and roll band in the world. The Rolling Stones is one of the longest lasting bands in the world. They make recordings even today and go on tours. It has happened many times that The Rolling Stones’s tour is the mosstones.jpgt successful tour of the year and their newest albums are usually listed among the top 5 of the Billboard 100 list. Through the 50 year career of The Rolling Stones Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts were constant members of the band. They sold more than 200 million CD’s all around the world. Their first official performance was on the 12th of July, 1962 in the Marquee Club.
Their first producer was Georgio Gomelsky who reserved the band in the Crawdaddy Club. In 8 months The Rolling Stones became London’s first concert band, even the Beatles watched their show. At that time the Beatles were good looking, with suits and brushed hair but The Rolling Stones were deliberately messy and uncared and on their album cover they looked like a group of criminals.
The Rolling Stones became popular in the US a little later in 1964. Their first „big” hit was „Time Is On My Side” in September ‘64. They continued with great power and reached their success, which came with „Satisfaction” in the summer of 1965. Their Between the Buttons album came out in 1967 and the most famous two songs were: „Ruby Tuesday” and „Let’s spend the night together”. They had to censor their lyrics on the latter because of their performance on the Ed Sullivan show. That was the first time the band sold itself.
In the beginning of 1968 they got a new producer, Allen Klein. In 1970 their signed contract with Decca Records from 1963 was coming to its end so the boys made their own record label: The Rolling Stones Records. Also in 1970 Mick Jagger in a suspence of a logo asked John Pasche, the young student from the Royal College of Art in London, to observe an emblem of the Indian Kali goddess, and make a logo. That’s how the sticking out tongue was born that later Andy Warhol used as a cover for the Sticky Fingers CD.

I chose an important song: Paint it black, which was inspired by the War in Vietnam.

The other one is Satisfaction that brought them their success.

THE VIETNAM WAR

The “Vietnam War” broke out in 1965 between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was a communist regime and was helped by China and the U.S.S.R., communist countries too. South Vietnam was a military dictatorship but it was helped by the U.S.A. The United States sent young people to fight there without experience. Finally, North Vietnam won the war, the United States retired from the country and the reunited Vietnam became the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

In the USA, during the Vietnam War, a big change took place in the American society. People protested against their government because they didn’t understand why young people had to go to fight there. So a new protest movement called “The Hippie Movement” was born. Their symbol was the daisy because it’s fragile and harmless. Their motto was: “MAKE LOVE, NOT WAR”.

make-love.jpg flower.jpg

Young people were not happy with their society and they tried to scape from it and so, they sometimes consumed drugs. They weren’t aware of the dangers that it represented until some of their idols started to die.

As far as music is concerned, two new music styles appeared:
  • Folk and Electric folk
  • Psychedelic rock

FOLK MUSIC

Folk music has no nameable origin. It’s more tradition than entertainment. There are folk songs that date so far back, they can be considered oral histories. Certainly, in America, songs by traditional American folksingers like Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie tell stories that often don’t even appear in history books.

Lead Belly House of the rising sun

lyrics

there is a house in new orleans

they call the rising sun

it's been the ruin of a many a poor girl

and me, oh god are one

if i had listened like momma said

i would not be here today

but being so young and foolish too

that a gambler lead me astray

come tell my baby sisters

dont do what i have done

please shun that house in new orleans

they call the rising sun

i'm goin back to new orleans

my race is almost run

i'm goin back to new orleans

beneath the rising sun

From its origins, folk music has been the music of the working class. It is community-focused and has rarely enjoyed commercial success. By definition, it is something anyone can understand and in which everyone is welcome to participate. Folk songs range in subject matter from war, work, civil rights, and economic hardship to nonsense, satire and, of course, love songs.

From the onset of American history, folk music has shown up at times when the people needed it most. The earliest folk songs rose from slave fields as spirituals: “Down by the Riverside,” “We Shall Overcome,” etc. These are songs about struggle and hardship, but are also full of hope. They sprang from the need of the worker to go to a place in her brain where she knew there was more to the world than the hardships she was facing at the time.

Fellow Workers

The 20th Century brought folk music back into the American psyche as workers struggled and struck for child labor laws and the eight-hour work day. Workers and folksingers gathered in churches, living rooms and union halls, and learned songs that helped them cope with their rough work environment. Joe Hill was an early folk songwriter and union agitator. His songs adapted the tunes of Baptist hymns by replacing the words with verses about the ongoing labor struggles. These tunes have been sung during worker strikes and in union halls ever since.

In the 1930s, folk music enjoyed a resurgence as the stock market crashed and workers everywhere were displaced, scrambling for jobs. A series of droughts and dust storms encouraged farmers out of the Dust Bowl region and toward promises in California and New York State. These communities were found in boxcars and jungle camps, as workers tried to make their way from job to job.

Woody Guthrie was one of those workers who headed to California in search of gainful employment. Woody wrote hundreds of songs between the 1930s and his death in 1967 of Huntington’s Chorea.

WOODY GUTHRIE This land is your land

In the 1940s, bluegrass began to evolve as a distinct genre with greats like Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys, which spawned banjo legend Earl Scruggs and guitarist Lester Flatt, as well as Del McCoury and others.

BILL MONROE AND THE BLUE GRASS BOYS Blue Grass Breakdown

A New Generation

In the ‘60s, again, the American worker found himself in struggle. This time, the main concern was not wages or benefits, but civil rights and the War in Vietnam. American folksingers gathered in coffee shops and at hootenannies in San Francisco and New York. They picked up the legacies of Woody Guthrie and others, singing songs about the concerns of the day. Out of this community rose Folk Rock’s superstars - Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, and others. Their work dealt with everything from love and war to work and play. The 1960s folk revival offered political commentary, sure, but also a powerful promise for change.

How and Why Did the Folk Revival Happen?

There were a lot of things that conspired to influence the folk music revival of the 1960s, but three major influences can be highlighted.

1. The Folklorists: During the early 20th Century, folklorists headed out across the country in hopes of documenting the musical styles traditional to various communities. John Lomax, for example, focused on documenting cowboy songs and the music of the African-American community (i.e. field recordings and prison recordings). The songs these folks collected—as documents and recordings—were a big part of the inspiration for the '60s revival.

JOHN LOMAX Sons of The Pioneers - Chant of The Wanderer -1941

2. The Anthology: Second was the Anthology of American Folk Music, compiled by filmmaker and record collector Harry Smith (the folklorists of the early 20th century are also to thank for many of the records on Smith's Anthology). This compilation featured artists ranging in style from banjo player Charlie Poole to the music of the Carter Family, folk-blues field recordings, and beyond. It gave budding folksingers a one-stop resource that exposed them to styles of music indigenous to communities they may never visit. Suddenly, musicians in Chicago could hear the music of Mississippi, for example.

PEG AND AWL - Anthology of American Folk Music

3. Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie: Finally, was the work of Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie, and the groups with which they performed during the '40s and '50s. The Almanac Singers and the groups they spun off into were a huge influence on the emergence of topical songwriting during the turbulent 1960s.

PETE SEEGER Which side are you on

Who Are Some Important Artists From the 1960s Folk Revival?

Although the blues, Cajun music, and other styles were definitely involved in the revival, as stated above, the '60s folk revival can be separated into two most prominent camps: the singer/songwriters and the old timers/traditionalists/bluegrass pickers.

Here are some important singers and songwriters:

BOB DYLAN

Short Biography of Bob Dylan

Staring his career as a folk musician, becoming a rock and roll legend, and continuously staying on the cutting edge of music meant that Bob Dylan would have nearly 30 years as a top music icon. He started out singing in the 1960s, reaching and astonishing crowds through his songs that were more like speeches to a generation searching for themselves. His popularity matched other great performers of the era.

Born in the small city of Duluth Minnesota, Dylan was always fascinated with the songs of Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters. During his time in high school, Bob Dylan played in numerous bands, hoping and dreaming that he would be able to play his music in front of bigger crowds. He went to university for three of the required four years, but found his calling to music when he made contacts with several prominent folk artists. It was his playing at Gerde’s Folk City in Greenwich Village in New York City that Columbia records discovered him. Within two years, Dylan was already mesmerizing audiences. His first album contained only two original songs, but his second gained national recognition. His tunes, such as Masters of War and Don’t Think Twice were giving youth an opportunity to think about their role in society and their government.

With changes occurring all around him, it wasn’t too before Dylan stepped into the softer scene. He began releasing love songs, such as “It Ain’t Me Babe,” which sold nearly a million copies. When Dylan finally stretched further into contemporary rock, he began to sell as hot as any other artist in the nation. In his second appearance as the Newport Folk Festival, he broke out into a rock and roll set that got him booed off stage.

However, Dylan’s next album allowed him to attain a new type of following. His songs, such as Desolation Row and Like a Rolling Stone became a part of the American music psyche. And, his chart-topping music proved that he had what it took to make it in any musical domain he wished. His next release, Blonde on Blonde in the mid-1960s, is widely appreciated by rock musicians even to this day. His style went unmatched and his song writing skills were unparalleled. After a motorcycle injury that almost cost him his career, Dylan stepped away from the public limelight for years. His return saw him recording some country music, along with a duet with Johnny Cash. Dylan wrote the best-selling song Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door for a film about Billy the Kid and acted in the film.

By the 1980s, Dylan had become a born-again Christian and his work also made another startling transition. The public and his fans were thrown aback and weren’t sure where he was heading. After becoming a Christian, he decided to return to the religion of his early years, joining Judaism. He then toured with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and the Grateful Dead. In 1995, Dylan released an MTV Unplugged album and won a Golden Globe in 2001 for his song writing.

Bob Dylan Like A Rolling Stone (ORIGINAL)

Lyrics:

Once upon a time you dressed so fine,

Threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you ?

People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall,"

You thought they were all a'kiddin' you.

You used to laugh about

Everybody that was hangin' out.

Now you don't talk so loud,

Now you don't seem so proud,

About having to be scrounging your next meal.

How does it feel ?

How does it feel ?

To be without a home ?

Like a complete unknown ?

Like a rolling stone ?

Aw, you've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely,

But you know you only used to get "juiced" in it.

Nobody's ever taught you how to live out on the street,

And now you're gonna have to get used to it.

You say you never compromise

With a mystery tramp, but now you realize

He's not selling any alibis

As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes

And say, "Do you want to make a deal?

How does it feel ?

How does it feel ?

To be on your own ?

With no direction home ?

A complete unknown ?

Like a rolling stone ?

Aw, you never turned around to see the frowns

On the jugglers and the clowns

When they all did tricks for you.

You never understood that it ain't no good,

You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you.

You used to ride on a chrome horse with your diplomat

Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat.

Ain't it hard when you discover that

He really wasn't where it's at

After he took from you everything he could steal ?

How does it feel ?

How does it feel ?

To have ya' on your own ?

With no direction home ?

Like a complete unknown ?

Like a rolling stone ?

Aw, princess on the steeple and all the pretty people

They're all drinkin', thinkin' that they've got it made.

Exchanging all precious gifts,

But you'd better take your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe.

You used to be so amused

At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used.

Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse.

When you ain't got nothing, you've got nothing to lose

You're invisible now, you've got no secrets to conceal.

How does it feel ?

Aw, how does it feel ?

To be on your own ?

With no direction home ?

Like a complete unknown ?

Like a rolling stone ?

BOB DYLAN Hurricane lyrics Live 1975

Pistols shots ring out in the barroom night

Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall

She sees the bartender in a pool of blood

Cries out "My God they killed them all"

Here comes the story of the Hurricane

The man the authorities came to blame

For something that he never done

Put him in a prison cell but one time he could-a been

The champion of the world.

Three bodies lying there does Patty see

And another man named Bello moving around mysteriously

"I didn't do it" he says and he throws up his hands

"I was only robbing the register I hope you understand

I saw them leaving" he says and he stops

"One of us had better call up the cops"

And so Patty calls the cops

And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flashing

In the hot New Jersey night.

Meanwhile far away in another part of town

Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are driving around

Number one contender for the middleweight crown

Had no idea what kinda shit was about to go down

When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road

Just like the time before and the time before that

In Patterson that's just the way things go

If you're black you might as well not shown up on the street

'Less you wanna draw the heat.

Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the corps

Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowling around

He said "I saw two men running out they looked like middleweights

They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates"

And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head

Cop said "Wait a minute boys this one's not dead"

So they took him to the infirmary

And though this man could hardly see

They told him that he could identify the guilty men.

Four in the morning and they haul Rubin in

Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs

The wounded man looks up through his one dying eye

Says "Wha'd you bring him in here for ? He ain't the guy !"

Yes here comes the story of the Hurricane

The man the authorities came to blame

For something that he never done

Put in a prison cell but one time he could-a been

The champion of the world.

Four months later the ghettos are in flame

Rubin's in South America fighting for his name

While Arthur Dexter Bradley's still in the robbery game

And the cops are putting the screws to him looking for somebody to blame

"Remember that murder that happened in a bar ?"

"Remember you said you saw the getaway car?"

"You think you'd like to play ball with the law ?"

"Think it might-a been that fighter you saw running that night ?"

"Don't forget that you are white".

Arthur Dexter Bradley said "I'm really not sure"

Cops said "A boy like you could use a break

We got you for the motel job and we're talking to your friend Bello

Now you don't wanta have to go back to jail be a nice fellow

You'll be doing society a favor

That sonofabitch is brave and getting braver

We want to put his ass in stir

We want to pin this triple murder on him

He ain't no Gentleman Jim".

Rubin could take a man out with just one punch

But he never did like to talk about it all that much

It's my work he'd say and I do it for pay

And when it's over I'd just as soon go on my way

Up to some paradise

Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice

And ride a horse along a trail

But then they took him to the jailhouse

Where they try to turn a man into a mouse.

All of Rubin's cards were marked in advance

The trial was a pig-circus he never had a chance

The judge made Rubin's witnesses drunkards from the slums

To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum

And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger

No one doubted that he pulled the trigger

And though they could not produce the gun

The DA said he was the one who did the deed

And the all-white jury agreed.

Rubin Carter was falsely tried

The crime was murder 'one' guess who testified

Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied

And the newspapers they all went along for the ride

How can the life of such a man

Be in the palm of some fool's hand ?

To see him obviously framed

Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land

Where justice is a game.

Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties

Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise

While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell

An innocent man in a living hell

That's the story of the Hurricane

But it won't be over till they clear his name

And give him back the time he's done

Put him in a prison cell but one time he could-a been

The champion of the world.

JOAN BAEZ

Short Biography of JOAN BAEZ

Joan Baez was born on January 9, 1941 in Staten Island, New York, the second of three daughters to Dr. Albert Baez, a physicist, and Joan Bridge Baez. Her mother was English-Scotish, the daughter of an Episcopalian Minister and a professor of drama who had migrated to the United States, and her father was of Mexican parentage, the son of a minister. Her father's activities as a physicist, researcher and UNESCO consultant took him to many parts of the country, and Joan's childhood was spent first in the small town of Clarence Center, New York, and then in Redlands, California. She developed both her social consciousness and her love for music at a relatively tender age. Picking up the ukulele, Baez made her performing debut at a high school talent show when she was 14, performing "Honey Love." There she began singing both for the high school choir and for herself, and learned to accompany herself on the guitar. When her father took a job at M.I.T. a few years later, the family moved to Boston, where for a short time she studied drama at Boston University. She enrolled at the university and soon began singing at the Boston coffee houses, colleges and later concert halls along the East Coast to increasingly large crowds. Then came her 1959 Newport Folk Festival debut. Baez signed with the then relatively small folk label, Vanguard, which first released her performances at the Newport Folk Festival, and then released her first album, Joan Baez, in 1960 and the rest, as they say, is history...

Her admirers transcend musical strata and national boundaries. Her growth as a musician and as a human being have proceeded hand in hand. Enrolling herself in the Civil Rights cause and the peace movement, a spokesman for non-violent resistance to and protest against immoral authority, she has refused to pay taxes that go to escalate the war in Vietnam, and has sung at almost every historic demonstration, and fosters a school for non-violent protest in California.

LYRICS

On a wagon bound for market

There's a calf with a mournful eye

High above him there's a swallow

Winging swiftly through the sky

How the winds are laughing

They laugh with all their might

Laugh and laugh the whole day through

And half the summer's night

Donna, Donna, Donna, Donna

Donna, Donna, Donna, Don

Donna, Donna, Donna, Donna

Donna, Donna, Donna, Don

"Stop complaining", said the farmer

Who told you a calf to be?

Why don't you have wings to fly with

Like the swallow so proud and free?

How the winds are laughing

They laugh with all their might

Laugh and laugh the whole day through

And half the summer's night

Donna, Donna, Donna, Donna

Donna, Donna, Donna, Don

Donna, Donna, Donna, Donna

Donna, Donna, Donna, Don

Calves are easily bound and slaughtered

Never knowing the reason why

But whoever treasures freedom

Like the swallow has learned to fly

How the winds are laughing

They laugh with all their might

Laugh and laugh the whole day through

And half the summer's night

Donna, Donna, Donna, Donna

Donna, Donna, Donna, Don

Donna, Donna, Donna, Donna

Donna, Donna, Donna, Don

ELECTRIC FOLK MUSIC

Electric folk (also called as folktronica and electrofolk ) is the name given to the form of folk rock pioneered in England from the late 1960s, and most significant in the 1970s, which then was taken up and developed in the surrounding Celtic cultures of Brittany, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of man, to produce Celtic rock and its derivatives. It has also been influential in those parts of the world with close cultural connections to Britain and gave rise to the genre of folk punk. By the 1980s the genre was in steep decline in popularity, but has survived and revived in significance, partly merging with the rock music and folk music cultures from which it originated. Although in Britain the term folk rock is often used synonymously with electric folk, commentators have returned to this term as a means of distinguishing this as a clear and distinct category within the wider folk rock genre.

THE MAMAS & THE PAPAS

map.jpg
mammas351.jpg

Formed: 1964 (New York, NY)

Genres: Folk-rock, pop, electrofolk

Members:

"Papa" John Phillips (b. August 30, 1935, Parris Island, SC; d. March 18, 2001, Los Angeles, CA): vocals (baritone)

"Mama" Cass Elliot (b. Ellen Naomi Cohen, September 19, 1941, Baltimore, MD; d. July 29, 1974, London, England): vocals (alto)

Denny Doherty (b. November 29, 1941, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, d. January 19, 2007, Mississauga, Ontario, CAN): vocals (tenor)

Michelle Phillips (b. Holly Michelle Gilliam, June 4, 1945, Long Beach, CA): vocals (soprano)

Contributions to music:

  • Arguably the most successful of the Sixties' folk-rock bands
  • Helped put California on the musical map with their sunny pop arrangements while embodying the Sixties West Coast dream
  • John Phillips is considered one of the era's great songwriters
  • The group's peerless harmonies were the envy of many pop groups of the time
  • "Mama" Cass remains a crucial feminine icon of the era, and is considered one of pop's great divas

Early years:

Mamas and the Papas founder "Papa" John Phillips had been active in the New York music scene since 1957, singing doo-wop, rock, and folk, when he met Holly Michelle Gilliam, an aspiring actress and model, at the Greenwich Village's legendary folk hangout the hungry i. Smitten, John soon left his first wife for Michelle, inviting her to join his folk group The Journeymen. Denny Doherty of the Mugwumps (which included future members of the Lovin' Spoonful) soon joined and suggested local jazz/folk singer Mama Cass, also from his band. John resisted at first due to Cass' overweight appearance, but her talent won out.

Success:

After a side trip to the Virgin Islands, the four went to Los Angeles, where record producer Lou Adler was instantly taken by the foursome's magic harmonies and Phillips' original songwriting. One of those songs, "California Dreamin'," became an instant smash in the winter of 1965, and several singles followed, including "I Saw Her Again," which John had written about an affair Denny had been having with Michelle, his wife! Complicating matters almost instantly was Cass' unrequited love for Denny and a steady diet of drugs, namely hallucinogens like LSD. (Michelle was actually replaced for a time briefly in 1966.)

Later years:
In the end, the love affairs, drug use, and what Cass saw as a general disrespect for her by other members of the band led to the group's demise in 1968. Cass began a successful solo career before her death from a heart attack in 1974; John became a notorious drug addict, leading to a famous bust in 1980, and Michelle went on to a second career as the actress she always wanted to be. John passed on from a heart attack himself in 2001, while Denny continued to form various tributes to his old band until his death in 2007 from complications arising from abdominal aneurysm surgery.

Other facts:
  • John Phillips penned "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair)," a hit for Scott McKenzie, and also co-wrote the Beach Boys' "Kokomo"
  • John is the father of actress MacKenzie Phillips; John and Michelle are parents to Chynna Phillips of Wilson Phillips fame; Michelle is mother to model/actress Bijou Phillips
  • Michelle was given half the writing credit for "California Dreamin'" simply for taking down the lyrics as John wrote them
  • Legend has it that Cass Elliot developed her higher vocal range after being hit on the head by a pipe
  • Despite the urban myth, Cass Elliot did not die from choking on a ham sandwich!!!

SIMON & GARFUNKEL

268f3e75b5ad0cb235ba08be8e4d0ddb.jpg

simon-and-garfunkel-bw.jpg

Formed: 1964 (Forest Hills, Queens, New York, NY)

Genres: Folk, Folk-rock, Pop-rock, Pop, Electrofolk

Members:

Paul Frederick Simon (b. October 13, 1941, Newark, NJ): vocals (baritone)

Arthur Ira "Art" Garfunkel (b. November 5, 1941, Queens, NY): vocals (tenor)

Contributions to music:
  • Folk and folk-rock's most successful duo
  • Established Paul Simon as one of the pre-eminent songwriters of his generation
  • Created the most seamless duo harmonies since the Everly Brothers
  • Brought folk-rock into the modern age with epic poetic stances and innovative production
  • Created a healing anthem for a turbulent era with the 1970 single "Bridge Over Troubled Water"
  • Began Simon's influential incorporation of world music into Western pop

Early years:
Childhood friends and schoolmates, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel began performing professionally at the age of 14 as a Everly Brothers-type duo called Tom and Jerry; in fact, they nearly scored a Top 40 hit in 1957 with Simon's composition "Hey, Schoolgirl." But subsequent success proved tough, and the duo soon went their own ways. By 1963, Simon had become inspired by the burgeoning Greenwich Village folk scene and started to write in that style. Garfunkel joined him for an album called Wednesday Morning, 3. A.M., but when it failed to chart, Paul decamped to England.

Success:
In 1965, however, Florida radio stations began receiving numerous requests for "The Sound Of Silence," a track from the album. Sensing an opportunity, producer Tom Wilson overdubbed "rock" drums and guitars over the acoustic track, creating the hit we know today. Simon returned to the US, and although neither man approved of the tinkering, they began recording hits in a similar style, including "I Am A Rock." Their career got a major boost in 1968 when their songs were featured in the Mike Nichols film The Graduate, a timely generational comedy that proved a smash hit

Later years:
By 1970, Simon's songwriting had grown considerably, leading to the massive hit "Bridge Over Troubled Water." The two had grown tired of working together by that time, and entered a hiatus that turned into more or less a permanent breakup. Simon went on to an even more successful solo career, while Art became a serious actor and sang with some degree of success. The duo have reunited periodically, most notably for a single in 1975 and a free New York Central Park concert in 1981, but for the most part they have remained separate entities.

  • Appeared on American Bandstand in 1957 as Tom and Jerry
  • The London "railway station" that inspired "Homeward Bound," Widnes Central, now features a plaque commemorating the song
  • "Mrs. Robinson" was originally called "Mrs. Roosevelt" but changed to reflect the name of a character in The Graduate
  • "El Condor Pasa" is based on an ancient Andean folk song
  • Asteroid 91287 Simon-Garfunkel is named for the duo

HISTORY:

Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek met when they were students at UCLA's film school. Robbie Krieger and John Densmore were in a band called The Psychedelic Rangers, and knew Manzarek through their meditation classes. Together, they formed The Doors in 1965, borrowing the name from The Doors Of Perception, a novel by Aldous Huxley.
They were signed to Elektra Records in 1966. The 1967 release of The Doors was the first in a series of top ten albums in the US, followed by Strange Days (1967), Waiting for the Sun (1968), The Soft Parade (1969), Morrison Hotel (1970), Absolutely Live (1970) and L.A. Woman (1971), with 19 Gold, 14 Platinum and 5 Multi-Platinum album awards in the United States alone. Although The Doors' active career ended in 1973, their popularity has persisted. According to the RIAA they have sold 32.5 million certified units in the US. The band has sold over 100 million albums worldwide. Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger continue to tour as "Manzarek–Krieger" or "Ray Manzarek & Robby Krieger of The Doors" for legal issues, performing Doors songs exclusively.

THE GROUP

Robert Alan "Robby" Krieger

He is an American rock guitarist and songwriter . He was the guitarist in The Doors , and wrote some of the band's best known songs, including "Light My Fire “ " Love me Two Times “ " Touch me ", and " Love Her hardly . Krieger's fingerstyle approach to the electric guitar eclectic musical tastes, and songwriting helped establish the Doors as a successful rock band in the 1960s. He is listed as number 91 on Rolling Stone’slist of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.

Ray Manzarek

Musician, Songwriter , Keyboardist, Filmmaker, met Morrison by chance on Venice Beach in California. Morrison said he had written some songs, and Manzarek expressed an interest in hearing them, whereupon Morrison sang a rough version of " Moonlight Drive" Manzarek liked the songs and co-founded the Doors with Morrison at that moment. Manzarek met drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger at a Transcendental Meditation lecture. Manzarek usually played the bass parts on a Fender Rhodes piano . His signature sound is that of the Vox Continental combo organ, an instrument used by many other psychedelic rock bands of the era.
Johnn DensmoreMusician, drummer, film maker he joined The Doors in 1965 and remained a member until the band's dissolution in 1973. He quit the band on one occasion in reaction to Jim Morrison's increasingly self-destructive behavior, although he returned the next day. After the Doors' last performance with Morrison in New Orleans in 1970, the band agreed to discontinue performing live. Densmore formed a band with fellow ex-Doors Robby Krieger in 1973 called The Butts Band but disbanded after two albums in 1975. Densmore left rock-and-roll in the 1980s, moving to the world of dance as he performed with Bess Snyder and Co., touring the United States for two years.

Jim Morrison and The Doors: Lead singer and songwriter

morrison.jpgAs the lead singer and lyricist for the Doors, Jim Morrison is one of the most legendary and influential figures in rock & roll history. The disturbing, image-rich poeticism of Morrison's lyrics, perfectly supported by the Doors' swirling, eclectic psychedelic rock, have assured him continuing icon status, while his fondness for theatrical shock tactics and nihilistic angst have influenced countless imitators. Unlike other psychedelic artists, who tended to favor whimsy or mysticism, Morrison saw expansion of consciousness as a way of gainingaccess to the subconscious mind's dark, unacknowledged desires; hisrampaging id dominated his songs with a lust for violence, sex, alcohol, drugs, self-destruction, anything forbidden for any reason by the authority of conservative middle America, and he tried to live out that lifestyle as best he could. Some of Morrison's work has been criticized -- both during his lifetime and afterwards as too melodramatic and calculatedly outrageous, but even at his most frustrating, Morrison's ideas have achieved a lasting resonance with newer generations as well as his initial fans, and his best material remains some of the most original and visionary rock music ever recorded.

The Doors: “People are Strange with lyrics

Comment:

It's easy to feel all alone when there's nobody there for you, and then start to believe that there's something wrong with yourself. This song captures that feeling of hopelessness without being overly depressing or whiny, actually it comes off as kind of funny. One of the best classics.

Another classic of the Doors is "Light my fire"

LIGHT MY FIRE

Most of the lyrics were written by Doors guitarist

Robbie Krieger. He wanted to write about one of the elements: fire, air, earth,

and water. Jim Morrison wrote some of the second verse, and Ray Manzarek came

up with the organ intro.

Janis-Columbia-cheap_thrills_big.jpg

Born on 19 January 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas. Breaking new ground for women in rock music, Janis Joplin rose to fame in the late 1960s and was known for her powerful, blues-inspired vocals. She grew up in a small Texas town. For years, Joplin struggled to escape from this confining community and spent even longer to trying to overcome her memories of her difficult years there. Developing a love for music at an early age, Joplin sang in her church choir as a child Most of the praise, however, focused on Joplin's incredible vocals. All of this attention caused some tension between Joplin and the rest of the band.
After hearing Joplin at Monterey, president of Columbia Records Clive Davis wanted to sign the band. Albert Grossman who already managed Bob Dylan, the Band, and Peter, Paul and Mary later signed on as the band's manager and was able to get them out of another record deal that they had signed earlier with Mainstream Records. While their recordings for Mainstream never really went anywhere, their first album for Columbia was a huge hit. The wildly successful Cheap Thrills (1968) was a challenge to make and caused even more problems between Joplin and her band mates.
